Where is Vietnam on the world AI map?

According to the Government Artificial Intelligence Readiness Index report conducted by Oxford Insights in conjunction with Canada's Center for International Development Research, Vietnam ranked 62nd out of 160 countries in the world in 2021, up 14 places compared to 2020.

Hoang Ngoc Duong, Deputy Director of Viettel Cyberspace Center (VTCC), said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has penetrated every aspect of life, from asking questions online to using a vacuum cleaner at home. He said that VTCC began to focus on developing AI in 2018, and so far, has served many Vietnamese firms, organizations and authorities in digital transformation.

Vu Anh Tu, Technology Director of FPT Corporation, affirmed, “AI will be available on all FPT products”. He said despite the fierce competition Vietnam faces with world-leading technological products, it has achieved remarkable progress in a number of fields, including AI.

“We believe that in the next few years, AI will have much potential to make breakthroughs. We have a university with about 1,000 students, who will be a valuable human resource to supplement teams making AI products for Vietnam and the world,” said Tu.

At the recent “Vietnam Artificial Intelligence Day 2022”, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc said that in recent years, AI has become increasingly essential in every aspect of life in Vietnam, especially in fields such as smart cities, health, insurance, smart agriculture, and environmental technology.

“During the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, many AI applications were developed to assist in interacting with people and diagnosing diseases. A number of large enterprises and corporations have developed AI research and development centers in Vietnam, attracting the world’s leading experts in this field,” Ngoc told event participants.

After over a year of implementing the national strategy on research, development and application of AI until 2030, Vietnam has achieved encouraging results, said Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat. Contributions of scientists and researchers in the field have been recognized and the capacity of Vietnamese enterprises to access, absorb and master AI technology has improved.

Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc said that the Ministry of Planning and Investment has drafted and submitted to the prime minister the national strategy on the Fourth Industrial Revolution to 2030, which encourages and facilitates the development of new technologies of high applicability that can solve problems for enterprises and enhance economic competitiveness.
