Vietnamese noodles clear EU safety hurdle

All of Vietnam’s instant noodle exports to Europe in the second half of 2022 have been found free of banned chemical residues, paving the way for eased inspection regimes of these popular products shipped to European markets.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Department of Science and Technology and other ministry units meet representatives of instant noodle exporters to the EU

This development was discussed at a March 24 meeting in Hanoi between officials of the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Department of Science and Technology and instant noodle exporters to the EU.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Vietnam Trade Office in Belgium and the EU, the European-American Market Department, eight instant noodle exporters to the EU, and two product testers. Participants discussed how to move forward with ensuring continued progress.

As of February 2022, Vietnamese instant noodles have been placed on an EU list of products requiring certification and increased inspections following the discovery of ethylene oxide (EO) residues in noodles shipped to several member states.

In February 2023, following year-long efforts to identify and fix the problem, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade issued 3,170 health certificates for products exported to the EU through 21 ports, more than half of them to Germany.

At the same time, the Technical Session of the Directorate General for Safety and Health (SANTE) of the European Commission also recognized Vietnam’s initial success in controlling instant noodle food safety.

In light of this progress, the European Commission has proposed lifting its certification demand for all instant noodle imports from Vietnam, although still requiring border gate inspections of 20 percent of imported batches. This proposal needs to be approved by member states by the end of April, according to the Vietnam Trade Office in Belgium and the EU.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has made strenuous efforts in issuing health safety certificates to nooddle exporters

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has undertaken intense efforts to bring Vietnam’s instant noodles into compliance with EU standards, directing testing units to improve inspections of these goods and instructing export businesses to ensure strict adherence with EU food safety regulations.

Large instant noodle exporters, including Acecook Vietnam Joint Stock Company, Vietnam Food Industry Joint Stock Company (VIFON), and Asia Food Joint Stock Company, among others, have committed to improved control of their supply chains and production and zero EO use in any stage of production for export to the EU.
