According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, by the end of 2022, the US ranked 11th among 140 countries and territories investing in Vietnam. US investors have 1,145 projects in Vietnam with total registered capital of more than US$10.3 billion, concentrated in accommodation and catering services (43.1 percent), processing and manufacturing industries (32 percent), water supply and waste treatment, transportation and warehousing.
At a meeting with the media, former US ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius who is President and CEO of the US-ASEAN Business Council said that Vietnam is the eighth largest trading partner of the US and that the US can share its experience with Vietnam in developing the digital economy and creative economy, as well as in green energy transition.
According to Osius, the US-ASEAN Business Council is aware of the further expansion of manufacturing centers and global supply chains in Vietnam in sectors such as semiconductors, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), toys, furniture, food, digital economy, creative economy, financial and banking services, and healthcare. The US and Vietnam are also interested in other fields of cooperation, such as aerospace and national defense and security.
Regarding opportunities for US businesses in Vietnam, Osius said the Vietnamese economy grew more than eight percent in 2022 despite the gloomy global economy. He added that Vietnam has adopted various policies to attract investment.
At the annual Vietnam Business Forum 2023 that took place recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh spent more than four hours answering questions of the business community. Osius said the business community, including US companies, was impressed by the Vietnamese Government’s willingness to deal with problems facing businesses.
Sharing this opinion, former US ambassador to Vietnam Michael W. Michalak, Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director of the US-ASEAN Business Council, said foreign-invested companies are satisfied with the Vietnamese Government’s willingness to join dialogue with businesses through forums, workshops and other events.
Major US firms such as Meta, AES and UPS shared their plans to invest in Vietnam. Rafael Frankel, Meta’s Director for the Asia-Pacific Region, said that the US and Vietnamese governments seek to boost bilateral cooperation, and that US companies wish to contribute to this process.
Managing Director for Vietnam of the global logistics provider UPS, Squall Wang, said UPS has been connecting Vietnamese businesses with customers all over the world for several decades and wants to continue working with policy makers and dialogue partners in the logistics sector for mutual long-term benefit.
Dang Thi Huong Lan, Foreign Affairs Director of AES Vietnam, highlighted energy as a strategic area of cooperation between the US and Vietnam. With an impressive economic growth rate, Vietnam's electricity demand has increased by more than 10 percent from 2016-2020 and is expected to grow 8-9 percent annually, requiring an installed capacity growth of about 6 GW per year.
AES pledged to contribute to this growth through reliable energy solutions to promote a cleaner and smarter energy future.
