The value of wood scraps for business

Reusing scraps derived from most stages of wood exploitation and processing will increase business profits by two to three percent.

Assoc. Prof. Vu Huy Dai from the Vietnam National University of Forestry said more than 5,800 firms and 340 craft villages operate in the wood industry, creating a large volume of wood by-products. Instead of discarding them, wood scraps have been used to provide heat for boilers to replace coal or oil, helping protect the environment and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In addition, using wood scraps to produce pellets, particleboards, and plywood contributes to improving the efficiency of raw material use and environmental protection.

By-products account for a relatively large proportion of wood processing

“Reusing by-products and waste from the wood processing process into pellets will help businesses increase profits by at least two to three percent. During the ongoing energy crisis, especially in Europe, the price of wood pellets has increased to a record high,” said Ngo Sy Hoai, Vice Chair of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association.

At the Phu Tai Joint Stock Company (in Binh Dinh Province), wood by-products are used as pellets and fuel for the factory’s boiler system, saving hundreds of billions of dong per year.

Similarly, at the Tan Vinh Cuu Joint Stock Company (in Dong Nai Province), all sawdust and waste products from the wood processing process are collected and sold to pellet manufacturers, increasing the company profits and reducing its environmental treatment costs.

The wood scrap use is in keeping with Vietnam’s gradual transition from a linear economic model to a circular economy, which yields practical economic benefits not only to businesses but also to the community and business partners. In particular, the reduction of CO2 emissions in production will contribute to the realization of Vietnam’s commitments to a net-zero carbon emission target by 2050.

However, in order to achieve a circular economy, or green and sustainable production model in forest product processing, Vietnam needs to invest and build pilot models suitable for the practical context of each enterprise. At the same time, enterprises must be helped and encouraged to innovate technology and their awareness must be raised about the effectiveness of the circular economy.

Developing a circular economy will require investment but also yield business value. The model not only creates added value for business, it also reinvests in the community for mutual development. As the community grows and develops, businesses will sell more goods and create greater value.
