Standardized raw material area
The northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh shipped a 17-tonne batch of white sugarcane, which had undergone preliminary processing, cleaning, and removal of all foreign plant matter, along with 10 sugarcane juice machines. The shipment is expected to arrive at a US port by the end of April 2023.
To prepare for export, Hoa Binh has standardized its sugarcane growing area in accordance with VietGAP standards and is preparing for registration of a planting area code.
Hoa Binh sugarcane has advanced significantly in recent years, according to a report by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. It began with the export of a 120kg sample of purple sugarcane to Japan in 2019 and has since grown tremendously, with exports of 5.7 tonnes in 2020, 74 tonnes in 2021, and 300 tonnes in 2022. Increased consumer demand and the product’s expansion into other countries, including the Republic of Korea (RoK), the UK, and the EU, demonstrate the success of the product’s improved quality, food safety controls, phytosanitary measures, and initial processing, packaging, and preservation methods.
At a ceremony marking the US shipment, Vice Chair of the Hoa Binh People’s Committee Dinh Cong Su noted that the province is known for its specialty sugarcane varieties, including purple and white sugarcane, which are high-quality and ideal for eating fresh or making juice. The favorable soil and climate in the area have contributed to the province’s reputation as a sugarcane producer.
“With this first shipment of fresh sugarcane exported to the US, Hoa Binh Province will continue to build on its initial success, paving the way for more agricultural products to expand their market reach. We are committed to promoting Hoa Binh sugarcane on the global stage and to expanding production, thus contributing to the development of the province’s sugar industry,” Su said.
Favorable business conditions
Research has shown that sugarcane contains protein, fat, starch, a variety of minerals, vitamins, and nearly 30 types of organic acids, providing necessary energy and nutrients. Oriental medicine attributes many health benefits to the sweet juice, including cooling down body heat, quenching thirst, detoxifying, dissipating phlegm, preventing vomiting, and curing fever.
Hoa Binh farmers grow two types of sugarcane, namely purple and white sugarcane, two varieties rarely grown in Vietnam's northern provinces.
The Tien Ngan Trading Investment Co., Ltd. has exported over 100 tonnes of Hoa Binh’s fresh sugarcane to the EU, Japan, and the RoK and plans to export about 300-500 tonnes of sugarcane in 2023. The company is urging the People’s Committee of Lac Son District to support the construction of raw material areas, production linkages, and the purchase of fresh sugarcane for export covering an area of 12 hectares. The company has also committed to purchasing all products with technical assurance according to contracts signed with organizations and cooperatives. They also pledge to invest in production materials and recover capital after purchasing products, creating favorable conditions for the development of sugarcane material areas.
Sugarcane, in addition to cultivation of oranges and pomelo, has helped many farmers overcome poverty and achieve sustainable incomes.
Dinh Cong Su, Vice Chair of Hoa Binh Provincial People’s Committee, has recommended that relevant units provide support and favorable conditions for businesses and farmers in the sugarcane cultivation sector. This includes organizing the production and preliminary processing of sugarcane products to meet the necessary requirements. |
