According to legend, the founder of the village’s stone handicraft was Hoang Sung from Thanh Hoa Province, who settled in what is currently Ninh Van Commune in Hoa Lu District of Ninh Binh Province. Sung passed his craft down to his descendants.
Archaeological artifacts have revealed that since the 10th century, Hoa Lu has been dubbed as the “stone capital” with its mountains, stone walls and buildings. Many documents about the Ninh Van stone handicraft village indicate that stone crafting was a hereditary profession. The know-how that artisans have mastered over the ages required patience, exploration, study, ingenuity and creativity.
Today’s stone products are very diverse, including ornamental pots, stone mortars, tables, chairs, and more. Fine art stone products are also crafted on large buildings such as communal houses, pagodas, tombs, monuments, and sculpture reliefs.
To create additional tourism products, experienced artisans from the craft village recently introduced a classic stone statue collection of a European girl.
Each classic stone statue is sculpted from Limestone QH03 white stone weighing 350 kilograms. It is a natural stone with high durability, and elegant, natural, warm color. The products are naturally beautiful, durable, have high artistic value and decorative applications.
Each statue is made by three artisans using a high-tech CNC cutting machine. Great attention to detail is required to produce the statues to ensure their durability.
Production Director of Ninh Binh Fine Art Stone Joint Stock Company, Huynh Van Trung explained that in order to create the unique European girl statue, the artisans have been working creatively to evaluate stone materials and select expressive themes. “The basis for the construction of the statue is still modeled on the standards of physical beauty of European-style girls. We want to make further breakthroughs to meet the tastes of domestic and foreign customers,” Trung added.
